Hey gang Looking for feedback with using a USB Monitor, Display link and Mac OS X It is a photography solution I am trying to resolve. I shoot theathered and need a feedback monitor for clients to see. Like a teleprompter type situation, while I can still use my laptop. The USB monitor appeals to me since they are compact and only need one cable, so less gear. I can also attach it to my tripod. Curious how well they work, and is the software good etc?
Would be used with a MacBook Air 11' Currently looking at the AOC e1659Fwu 16-Inch Class, USB 3.0-Powered, Portable LCD / LED Monitor Max Resolution: 1366 × 768 which matches the Air's screen size. I have a Display Link dock connected to two monitors (dock is connected to the monitors via HDMI, a Macbook Air 11' via USB). I've never used a DisplayLink USB monitor, but my thoughts on the dock follow.
You don't mention what Mac OS version, so I'll assume Sierra. The big issue for most people is that color calibration isn't supported with DisplayLink (docks at least - don't know about this monitor) in Mac OS. This isn't a problem for me, but I could see it being a big problem for photography work. Next, the Mac OS Sierra DisplayLink drivers aren't great - DisplayLink tends to blame the issues on bugs in Mac OS, but regardless there are issues with window corruption and tearing, among other things. These can be mostly eliminating by turning on 'Reduce Transparency', but there is still some oddness here and there. You might review the known issues to see if you can live with them. Overall I love the DisplayLink concept, but it does have it's drawbacks.
I'm not sure it's the best solution for photography work though. Happy to answer any other questions you might have. Thanks for the feedback. On all my Mac's I am running 10.11.6.
Not ready for 10.12 yet as it is still being patched. Good thing to, as I did notice the warning about the Display link drivers with 10.12. The colour accuracy doesn't bother me. It's just some visual feedback, framing-poistioing, nothing more, and not very demanding. All the other settings have been dialed in by other software.
See I shoot at different events locations so less weight, less cables, just less stuff to cart around helps. I only run 1 piece of software. All the other edits etc happen on my desktop when I get back from a shoot. Download Mirc Power Script Portable more. Actually it all runs in a VM in Windows 7 on the Air. As Apple has force windows 10 only for boot camp, and Windows 10 has issues I can't work with while in the field. I had initially planned to use a iPad Pro 12. Sniffer Free Download. 9 with duet display.
But it has retina display and between the 2, the resolutions do not match up well. So this idea to use a USB monitor helps as it matches the resolution of the Air perfectly. I'll have to visit the local computer shop to take a look at the physical size now. Curious which OS version(s) have you all been using the drivers with?
If is only 10.12 with problems, then I can avoid it. If you can elaborate more on the quirks it would be helpful. I don’t know if you can get a perfect match, but Duet allows different resolutions on the iPad display. If you haven’t tried it yet it’s only $10, give it a shot.
Helps me remember to keep my iPad charged too. You can't, and I have tried with the Air 11' and the iPad Pro 12.9. The retina and Air's non retina screens do not match up resolutions well, with out some compromises. You can get something in between but is is very awkward. BTW I do have Duet Display which I picked up during the holiday sale in December.
I do have a Macbook Pro 13' which does have retina display so maybe this is a better match for the iPad Pro 12.9. Just not sure if I want to use the rMBP 13 as event laptop.
